Grosser leans toward growing headcount leanly because overhiring adds coordination cost, though she thinks Stripe probably could have grown revenue faster with more people at times. Listen
She said that even when revenue isn't a problem, overhiring blurs job definitions, makes people step on each other's toes, and leaves more new people who don't know what they're doing than experienced ones. She finds lean growth more intellectually interesting because it forces hard prioritisation, automation and use of data. She admitted she has to consciously push herself on this, and that there were points at Stripe where more people probably would have meant faster revenue growth.
“You actually just slow the entire machine down with coordination cost.”
